Grow a Bee Border

Plant multiple varieties of bee-attracting plants in swaths to make identifying the plants and foraging easier for bees.

Plan for succession to ensure there is a long blooming period.

Plant native bee plants that are drought tolerant and adapt easily.

I’ve been known to spend time with an artist’s paintbrush hand-pollinating plants to improve fruiting. All the while thanking the bees around me for the hard work that they do to make my garden bountiful. Creating a border of bee-attracting plants around your vegetable garden helps bring in a workforce of pollinators and gives you a better harvest.

Once you attract bees and other pollinators, they search for more flowers. A few small steps can help you create a wonderful bee border that will be welcoming to bees, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the hustle and bustle as they work.

Here are some helpful tips for creating a border:

A simple and inexpensive idea for a bee border is to scatter bee-blend wildflower seeds and loose soil around the garden. A mix of annual and perennial seeds will give the longest bloom times. Look for seeds from local seed companies that specialize in bee and pollinator blends for your area. That way you’ll start to attract the largest number of wild bees naturally.

Plant multiples of each variety so that bees see large swaths of flowers to forage in.

Plan your bee plants so that they are blooming from early in the season until very late.

Plant flowering native plants to attract and maintain wild bees.

The majority of native bees are ground-dwelling bees so it’s important to ensure care when maintaining the garden. Leaving mulch in place and only digging when absolutely necessary will allow ground bees to stay undisturbed in their homes.

Add a bee bath. Fill a shallow dish of water halfway and place a few pebbles to sit above the water line so bees can land safely and drink while they forage and nest.
